WASHINGTON, D. C. (AP) — Food and Drug Administration officials are warning consumers about a new drug designed to treat erectile dysfunction.
The FDA is warning consumers that the drug, which treats the most common form of impotence, is only approved to be taken as a tablet.
The drug is based on a study published last year by researchers from the New Zealand-based drug firm GlaxoSmithKline. That study found a slight increase in blood flow to the penis after taking the drug, but it is not enough to trigger an erection.
The FDA also said it was conducting a review of the drug’s label and said that it was not aware of any other drug that could be used to treat the symptoms.
The drug is marketed under the brand name Viagra and is taken by millions of Americans every year.
“This is a dangerous drug that should not be given to patients for any other use,” said U. S. Rep. Elijah E.ancouver of Vancouver, B. “This drug should not be used in patients who have a significant heart condition or who are taking other medicines.”
The drug is approved by the FDA in about one in five men with erectile dysfunction. The FDA also is not aware of any other drugs to treat this condition.
Erectile dysfunction can lead to low sexual desire and problems with relationships. The FDA said that if men with erectile dysfunction are prescribed a drug to treat the symptoms, the drug should be taken only as needed.
Erectile dysfunction can be caused by many factors, including diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, high blood sugar, smoking, and drinking alcohol.
In the New Zealand study, researchers compared patients with mild to severe erectile dysfunction and a control group who did not take the drug.
